Group hike at a wetland overview at Monson Center

Admiring the wetland which hosts a Great Blue Heron Rookery at Monson. A recent Forest Society staff-guided group hike visits historic cellars of early colonial era homes and an extensive beaver-created wetland with mallard ducks at peak foliage season.

When the fall foliage peaks, so do ideal conditions for autumn hiking at Forest Society properties.

The annual 5 Hikes Challenge includes a series of guided pop-up hikes to a few of the most popular destinations.  Historic Monson Center is 269-acres owned by The Forest Society in Milford and Hollis that features several easy and relatively level walking trail options. Trails access some of the early cellar holes of New Hampshire's earliest and most inland colonial era settlement at Dunstable (later Monson) in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Cooler, crisp autumn temperatures, falling leaves, blue skies and golden late afternoon sunlight made for an ideal autumn walk in the forest. We visited the Thomas Gould Clockmaker's Shop, the Nevins family cellars and the beaver-created wetland which hosts nesting Great Blue Herons in early summer months.

There are still a few weeks left to collect your own five hikes. Or join us for more upcoming staff-guided hikes at Mount Major on Wednesday October 22, or a guided hike on the new Dottie Bean Forest on Wednesday October 29.
