Help Conserve 650 Acres in the Nelson Highlands

Making a Key Connection in the Quabbin-to-Cardigan Landscape

Stretching across four peaks at the northern end of Nubanusit Lake, the Nelson Highlands Forest encompasses 650 acres of forests, streams, vernal pools, and rugged terrain that support wildlife and define the expansive views enjoyed by paddlers and hikers throughout the region.

Held in family ownership for decades, this remarkable property forms a critical link in a larger network of conserved lands connecting Mount Monadnock to Mount Sunapee and beyond. Located within both the Harris Center's SuperSanctuary focus area and the 2-million-acre Quabbin-to-Cardigan landscape, the property helps sustain one of New England's most significant forest corridors.

The land includes four peaks rising above 1,600 feet, high-elevation vernal pools, perennial and intermittent streams, red spruce forests, and extensive wildlife habitat. Stone walls, cellar holes, and former farm fields tell the story of generations who once worked this landscape before it returned to forest.

Without permanent protection, the property could be subdivided and sold. Instead, the Forest Society has secured an agreement to purchase the land and conserve it forever.

The Nelson Highlands Forest will expand a growing network of protected lands that includes the Forest Society's Welch Family Farm and Forest and Peirce and Williams Forests, as well as nearby conservation lands owned by the Harris Center for Conservation Education and NH Audubon. Upon acquisition, the Harris Center will hold a conservation easement on the property, ensuring its long-term protection.

Together, the Forest Society and Harris Center are working to raise $1.77 million to support the purchase, transaction costs, and stewardship of this important conservation project. Thanks to grant funding, local supporters, and private fundraising efforts, nearly $1.2 million has already been secured.

We now need to raise the final $500,000 by the end of 2026 to meet our March 2027 closing deadline.

Recent delays and uncertainty in federal funding programs mean private support is more important than ever. Your gift today will help permanently protect this extraordinary landscape, ensuring that future generations can paddle the waters of Nubanusit Lake, explore its surrounding forests, and experience a landscape where moose, bear, bobcat, and countless other species can continue to thrive.

Please make your contribution today and help conserve the Nelson Highlands Forest forever.
