We celebrated our 200th conserved property—the 300+ acre Dottie Bean Forest in Farmington—with 50+ friends, a scenic hike, and a tribute to Dottie’s legacy.
More than 50 friends, neighbors, and Forest Society members gathered on Sunday, July 13, to celebrate a milestone in conservation: the dedication of the Dottie Bean Forest in Farmington—our 200th conserved forest property.
Under a tent in a sunny open field along Meetinghouse Hill Road, attendees enjoyed scenic views of the newly conserved forest on Chesley Mountain, as well as the horse pasture and historic farmhouse now under private ownership. The atmosphere was warm in every sense—weather, welcome, and shared purpose.
Forest Society President Jack Savage opened the celebration with remarks recognizing the significance of the moment and honoring the late Dorothy “Dottie” Bean, who generously bequeathed the 280-acre property to the Forest Society. Miles Olstad, a close friend and neighbor of Dottie’s, followed with heartfelt stories and remembrances that painted a vivid picture of her life and love for the land.
The crowd included Farmington neighbors, Forest Society members, and local conservation supporters—many of whom knew Dottie personally. After the dedication, guests gathered for cake, lemonade, and watermelon before lacing up their boots for a group hike.
Roughly 30 attendees joined Forest Society staff for a 1.5-mile guided hike on the well-marked loop trail. The group traveled from the new trailhead sign through mixed woods and up to the open ledges near the summit of Chesley Mountain. Along the way, ripe blueberries added a sweet surprise, and the panoramic views to the east and south offered a stunning vantage over Farmington and the surrounding countryside.
