Opal the Guide Dog

Forest Society employee provides dogs-eye view

February 5, 2015

My name is Opal and I am the cutest new employee at the Forest Society. Well at least that’s what everyone is telling me and yes, I am letting it go to my head. Let me explain…. I am a working dog with a new job.

Almost 4 years ago I met my “mom”, Amy Nichols, who is legally blind. She came to the school where I was getting trained to help people like her.  I show her the staircase, the curb changes and even let her know when a car is coming too close or help her find things like a chair or trash can.

Recently we started working at the Forest Society. Our office is very nice with two large windows, but they are up to high for me to see out of them without putting my feet up on the ledge so I don’t get to look out of them much. We also have our own heat control and it comes out from under mom’s desk and this has become my favorite spot for napping, which I am good at.

One time we went to this meeting thing and I got to meet some people they call Board Members. Mom told me to behave but there was this one person who had cookies in his pocket and I could smell that he was a dog person. So when mom wasn’t looking I crawled over to him very quietly and put my paws on him until he pet me. I decided to hang out with him for the meeting hoping I would get one of those cookies, but I fell asleep. Meetings are too long and boring for me so I often fall asleep and dream.  At this meeting I had a great dream which caused me to make noises in my sleep like when I am chasing a squirrel or playing in the snow. Mom woke me up and had me come back over to her and I never got that cookie.  Maybe next time as long as I don’t fall asleep and get caught.
