Summer Forestry Technician (Seasonal)

Founded in 1901, the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (The Forest Society) is one of the nation’s oldest, largest, and most successful state-based land conservation and forestry organizations. A full-time staff of 45 administers programs in land protection, conservation education, environmental advocacy, and sustainable forest resource management.  Recreation Stewardship and Forestry staff currently oversee the management of 200 properties totaling nearly 70,000 acres, located in 108 NH communities. 

The Forest Society is currently seeking two full-time, temporary, 12-week summer forestry technicians to perform the following tasks: (for more information about the Forest Society visit www.forestsociety.org).

 

Job Responsibilities (may include some to all of the following):

  • Locate, blaze and paint boundary lines (Approximately 60% of the summer is devoted to this)
  • Perform post-harvest surveys to record regeneration, snags, downed woody debris, and invasive spp.
  • Engage in everyday stewardship activities, which could include: trail work, recreation management, property maintenance, rare plant restoration, or other needs identified by Land Management staff
  • Assist staff and volunteers with running workdays and trainings
  • Monitor properties as part of our Land Trust Alliance annual monitoring responsibilities

 

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ability to work long hours in rough conditions including heat, rain, bugs and rugged terrain
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and be proficient with hand tools (axe experience a plus) 
  • Ability to work alone and navigate to remote locations throughout NH with maps, compass and GPS 
  • Experience in natural resources field data collection and familiarity with forestry field tools (clinometer, Biltmore stick, d-tape, data collectors)
  • Ability to identify common NH tree species and non-native invasive plants
  • Ability to use a chainsaw & other power tools/equipment (brush saw, cordless drill) is helpful but not required
  • Ability to use ESRI ArcGIS Pro software (helpful) and phone applications such as Avenza and Gaia 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, vehicle insurance, a cell phone and ability to travel throughout New Hampshire. Housing is not provided.
  • Outdoor skills and savvy
  • Ability to do an occasional overnight or weekend

  • Hourly Wages ($19 to $20 per hour, based on experience)
