Sunapee Lease Public Meeting

Will Abbott | September 21, 2018

The Department of Natural and Cultural Resources will hold a public information session on the proposed assignment of the State’s lease of a portion of Mount Sunapee State Park.

The Department has received a request to consent to the assignment of the lease to The Sunapee Difference, LLC, which will be indirectly owned by VR NE Holdings, LLC, a subsidiary of Vail Resorts, Inc. (“Vail”). After careful consideration of public comments and working with the Attorney General’s Office, Commissioner Sarah Stewart will release the decision on the proposed transfer and details related to the decision.
The session will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at 6 p.m. at Mount Sunapee Resort’s Sunapee Lodge located at Mount Sunapee State Park in Newbury, NH. The Department posted responses to public comments, the decision and other related documents on NH State Parks' Mount Sunapee Advisory Committee page.

Forest Society Comment on Mount Sunapee Decision

Jack Savage | April 6, 2016

"Given our history in protecting Mount Sunapee, and given that we have not been in favor of the expansion, it's hard not to be disappointed in today's vote. Whenever there's talk about "balance" it usually means that something in mountains and the forests has been irretrievably lost.

"Looking ahead, the Forest Society would welcome the opportunity to explore permanently conserving the land immediately adjacent the State Park owned by stakeholders in the ski area lease (but not part of the expansion proposal). We have written to the Governor to ask for her support in exploring this idea.

"Such an outcome, we believe, would go a long way to addressing concerns about the long-term future of Mount Sunapee as one of the state’s great natural icons.
