N.H. Deserves a Highly Qualified DES Commissioner

Matt Leahy | April 28, 2017

On April 17, Gov. Chris Sununu withdrew his nomination of Peter Kujawski to be Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Services after members of the N.H. Executive Council raised questions about his experience.  In response to that action, the Forest Society joined our partners in the environmental community in sending this letter to the Governor outlining our recommendations on the proper qualifications for this position.

In short, we believe the DES Commissioner is the chief steward of the State’s natural resources.  The person holding this position should have a strong, demonstrated knowledge of the laws and policies that guide DES’s mission.

Just as importantly, the commissioner should be dedicated to strengthening the Department’s commitment to addressing the major environmental policy and natural resource management challenges facing our State today.

If you agree that the next DES commissioner should bring to this position the background we expressed in our letter to Gov. Sununu, please let him know. Click here to contact Gov. Sununu today.
