Liberty Utilities says that pipeline – Kinder Morgan’s Northeast Energy Direct or NED – is the cheapest way to aggressively grow its customer base. Opponents of the pipeline say the company is overstating that growth in order to get the pipeline built.

The U.S. Department of Energy released its draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Northern Pass Transmission line Tuesday and its conclusions back up some of the concerns by project critics about adverse impacts to landscapes, tourism and property values.

The route proposed for the Northern Pass hydroelectric project by Eversource Energy and HydroQuebec is the cheapest solution for building a 187-mile electric transmission corridor through the state but imposes the greatest environmental impacts, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, which has attempted to block the project through the acquisition of easements and property rights in the North Country, said the EIS confirmed the benefit of burying the line.

The fast-track toward approval of the 154-mile New England Clean Power Link highlights the benefits of burying transmission lines along state highways.

FRANCONIA, N.H. -- U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-NH, and state Sen. Jeanie Forrester, R-Meredith, were given a warm welcome in Franconia Wednesday and applauded for their efforts against the proposed Northern Pass Transmission line.

A wind farm that was rejected by a state panel in 2013 is asking for a re-hearing.

The group, the Conservation Law Foundation, also happens to be a major opponent of another high-profile bid to carry power from Hydro Quebec, the proposed Northern Pass line through New Hampshire.

New Hampshire is home to roughly 25 million ash trees. Two years ago, we learned the state is also home to a devastating invasive beetle – the emerald ash borer – which can completely destroy infested stands of ash trees in as little as six years.
