Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF)

Senator Jeanne Shaheen has taken a leadership role in the United States Senate to advance federal funding of land conservation. Joining Vermont Democrat Patrick Leahy and Maine Republican Olympia Snowe, Shaheen has asked her Senate colleagues to support funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWFC) and the Forest Legacy Program (FLP) at levels recommended by President Obama for the federal fiscal year starting October 1, 2010. Click here to read letter. The LWCF is the federal government's primary means of supporting public land conservation at the federal, state and local level. FLP is the only federal program that permanently protects privately owned working forests as working forests, with more than 215,000 acres in New Hampshire protected since the program started in 1993. Funding for both programs comes from revenues the federal government receives from off shore oil and gas leases.
